When I was a little girl I want to change the world. I didn’t know how, I didn't really know why - all I knew was that I wanted to make an impact in a world where people were hurting. I studied Rehabilitation Counselling and graduated from the University of Sydney in 1994. I didn’t understand that having this undergraduate degree would provide me a foundation for helping people to take back control of their lives following injury, illness and trauma. I’ve been practicing as a clinician for 20 years. I smile as I remember some of the client’s who have overcome insurmountable odds to be alive, to walk again, to return to their families; to manage their pain; to represent their country at the Olympics; who can’t walk but learn to fly a plane….. people are amazing.

I passionately believe that private practice is the change we need in health care. Private Practice is good for the client, its good for the community, it’s good for the clinician.

Every time we as a clinician empower someone – to heal; to accept; to grieve; to build; to trust we are doing so much more than just influencing 1 person. . We are influencing a family. And when we influence families we influence communities. When we influence communities we influence cities. When we influence cites we influence the state – when we influence states we will change NATIONS.

Since the tender age of 8, Samantha has expressed an innate and sincere desire to ease suffering of others and leave the world a better place. Most of her ideas and childhood "projects" were built upon the foundation of making others "feel better" or fostering hope in tragic situations. Samantha's natural character strengths made counseling an ideal professional match, which she honors with integrity and passion. During her many years of education, Samantha also developed, accidentally, a love for entrepreneurship. She has had several ideas that were explored but not executed for various reasons until she, with her husband, dreamt up KhoSpace - the first boutique co-working space designed just for mental health and helping professionals!
In addition to helping others, Samantha has a few other "in another life" identities. Before pursuing counseling, Samantha obtained a masters in public relations and wanted to be the next Today Show host! She briefly lived in Los Angeles and was into the Hollywood and PR scene for a while, but realized it didn't feel authentic. She loves sugar and sweets and wanted to spread her love through baking, but realized while she may have the talent, she didn't have the drive to wake up at 3 am every day! Lastly, Samantha absolutely loves dogs! Her mini goldendoodle, Georgie, is the apple of her eye and "totally has me wrapped around his paw... I think when I have kids one day, I'll be in trouble!"

Jessica Richards, LMHC owner of The Center of Life Counseling and Administrator of The Beginning Counselor's of Florida. During my last year of grad school, in 2013, I knew I wanted to be in private practice and work with college age students struggling with anxiety and depression. It was the very reason I began my degree in psychology and counseling in the first place.

Little did I know that the journey would be met with many hurdles and struggles that I was not prepared for. I now take my experience and journey and share it with new grads and registered interns providing tips and tools to have a successful internship to licensure journey.

A few fun facts about my experience:

1. My licensure experience lasted from 2013-2017, approximately 4 years. More than the 2 year's many assume it takes.
2. I had over 4 qualified supervisors throughout this period, most at the same time.
3. I was in private practice the entire journey along with agency and group contract work.
4. I took 4 months off from the field altogether after a "post-grad existential crisis"
5. I took the NCMHCE 3 times.
6. I taught CEU courses for licensed clinicians during internship.

A few fun personal facts about myself are I freaking love love adventures, traveling, fishing is a new hobby I've started within the last year or so, painting, and animals. I'm trying to learn how to golf but, have no idea what I'm doing just seems like a Floridian thing to do.

My gift is to help and encourage others!
For over 30 years I have been doing this in the world of business as well.
Being a Certified Professional Coach and the CEO of MSS allows me the opportunity - along with my expertise, skills and 13 years of experience in Mental Health - to come alongside therapists and help them manage, grow, maintain and thrive in their private practice.
Understanding the importance of the business component (which is everything on the outside of the therapy room) to private practice and to be successful, I specialize and provide customized and valuable services and results. THIS is what allows the clinician to shine in their areas of there strengths, to get back to doing what they are called to do and to help them once again enjoy their dream!
I don't do this on my own and neither should you!

Roy Huggins, LPC, NCC, is one of mental health's top experts on technology and ethics. Roy is the Director of Person Centered Tech, an organization that provides continuing education, consulting and support services for mental health professionals around utilization of tech in their practices in an ethical and HIPAA compliant manner. Roy also has a private practice in which he specializes in providing counseling services to tech workers, "geeks" and startups. Roy was himself an independent web developer for many years before making the transition to a therapy private practice. He quickly found that the mental health profession needed expert guidance on technology topics. Roy founded Person Centered Tech in 2010 after helping answer a colleague’s questions about legal and ethical use of email. His research to answer that first question exposed him to the industry’s difficulties applying the HIPAA-mandated risk assessment perspective to issues of technology.

Since 2010, Roy has continuously worked to expand his understanding of his colleagues’ needs and stay up-to-date with the ever-evolving digital world. He’s also found the time to teach ethics at Portland State University, serve on the board of the Oregon Counseling Association and the Zur Institute Advisory Committee, consult with counselor licensing boards and individual therapists on issues relating to technology in therapy practice, as well as co-authoring or authoring 2 book chapters and contributing to numerous publications.

Roy's combination of experience as a techie web developer and private practitioner give him a unique understanding from which to provide accessible and actionable guidance to mental health professionals seeking knowledge and direction on how to use tech in a legal and ethical way.

A few fun facts about Roy: he speaks Japanese and has an online therapy practice with clients in Japan; he loves "kittehs"; and fully embraces the use of emojis in text-based communications ;-).
